Soul of WoMen Conference 2018 - for men and women

Balancing the masculine and feminine qualities within ourselves, our communities and our world.

The second Soul of WoMen conference, will consist of talks, round table discussions and skill sharing workshops. Its goal is to inspire and empower a more gender-balanced world. Topics being explored include: equality, health, the environment, community engagement, civic pride and individual action - with an emphasis on sharing positive solutions.

The day will consist of talks by three internationally renowned speakers, followed by round-table discussions, three workshop sessions, a delicious and nourishing lunch provided, to keep your energy high.

2018 SPEAKERS

  Alistair McIntosh   (Scotland)   has been described by BBC TV as “one of the world’s leading environmental campaigners.” A pioneer of modern land reform in Scotland, he helped bring the Isle of Eigg into community ownership. On the Isle of Harris he negotiated withdrawal of the world’s biggest cement company (Lafarge) from a devastating “super quarry” plan, then agreed to serve (unpaid) on that company’s Sustainability Stakeholders Panel for 10 years.   Alastair guest lectures at military staff colleges, most notably the UK Defence Academy, on  nonviolence . His books include  Soil and Soul: People versus Corporate Power  (Aurum),  Hell and High Water: Climate Change, Hope and the Human Condition  (Birlinn),  Rekindling Community  (Green Books) and  Spiritual Activism: Leadership as Service  (Green Books).  His most recent major work is  Poacher’s Pilgrimage: an Island Journey  (Birlinn 2016, due in USA from Cascade 2018). He is a fellow of the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh and a visiting professor at the College of Social Sciences, University of Glasgow.   Rika Saionji   Rika was brought up in a family whose parents (Masami & Hiroo Saionji) were dedicated to working for the peace.  Her core values come from her spiritual teacher and grand father  Masahisa Goi  who taught her the importance of the prayer 'May Peace Prevail on Earth'.

  Lesley Howells    Lesley is Research Lead for the Maggie’s network of centres across the UK, she is also Centre Head and Consultant Clinical Psychologist for Maggie’s Dundee.   Lesley’s responsibilities include: providing psychology support to people and their families affected by cancer, assisting in the development of the Maggie’s programme of support, monitoring the evidence based that underpins the Maggie’s programme, development and delivery of staff training, psychology supervision and professional leadership and the management of the Maggie’s Research Portfolio. She is an NHS Accredited Trainer in Advanced Communication, Accredited Mindfulness Teacher and has specialist expertise in the teaching and supervision of NHS Specialist Palliative Care professionals.  Since qualifying in 1991 her research and clinical focus has been families, individuals and couples facing life-changing trauma and transitions, primarily those prompted by changes in physical health (e.g. families with cystic fibrosis, diabetes). Prior to moving to the third sector in 2004 she was Specialist Lead for Clinical Health Psychology in NHS Dumfries and Galloway.  Website.  www.maggiescentres.org

Soul of WoMen 2016

The first Soul of WoMen conference in 2016 was a great success; it welcomed 120 participants, from Nithsdale, wider Scotland and around the globe for a wonderful day full of inspiration, joy and connection.

2016 speakers included Mhairi Black MP, (the youngest member of the House of Commons) Dr. Jude Currivan, (international author, healer and cosmologist), Asma Khalifa, (peace activist and Luxembourg Peace Prize Winner 2016), John Nicholls, (Youth Work Director at LGBT Scotland), and Sesto Giovanni Castagnoli, (Founder member of the World Spirit Forum and Founder of the YES Initiative, Youth Europe Self Empowerment Initiative).
